SONGELI (self made Kite)

Before pyjamas became fashion for kids in Africa, every child used their Mothers extra piece of cloth on the kaba and slit style to sleep and "sadekortome" (wrap around neck like a dress) when we wake up.

And before the invention of the drone, the African child had been learning to fly "songeli" (self made kite).

Songeli is the Ewe name for the self made kite we made as kids and it was a priceless possession to have on Saturday mornings when there was no school or Church.

The materials needed to build a "songeli" included paper card, sticks and very long strong thread so you can fly the kite high and the best way to get that kind of thread was to steal or "borrow" your Mothers or Grandmothers "detsika" or "ɖablaka"

Detsika is the Ewe name for the old thread women used to pleat their hairstyle like "Atsipipi" and "Gbormikoe" which dates back to the 70s and 80s.

Kids this days don't "savordekortome" or fly "songeli" just as women no more use "detsika" or "ɖablaka" or even do the "atsipipi" or "gbormikoe" again.
